The first couple of days

Hola! We have safely arrived in the Dominican Republic and are staying in an Episcopalian Retreat center in San Pedro. We are taking it easy before we begin our service work on Monday or Tuesday. Yesterday and today, we walked around a little to take a look at the city. In most areas, it is rundown with litter along the streets. But at the same time, you can find beautiful buildings. As we were walking yesterday, two brothers came and asked us for money. They were ages 12 and 8. The 12 year old was carrying shoe shining supplies on his back. It was his way of making money.

Today, a priest who is in charge of multiple programs came and talked with us. These services help the uneducated, the sick, the poor, and the deliquents. He told us some things about what service accomplishes.

For one, it reminds us, and the people we´re working with, that we are all brothers and sisters living together under the same God. Secondly, he pointed out that when we come and help from the United States, there is more attention brought to the issues here after we leave. The authorities want the reputation of the Dominican Republic to be good. So, they pay attention to the problems that visitors are noticing.

We also had a great time enjoying the view at the waterfront and a stroll through the park. Tomorrow morning, we´re off to a church service in one of the neighborhoods and then on to the beach!
